HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SPIDEY!

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first issue of Marvel Comics' THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Arguably a contender for the most recognizable super-hero since Superman, Spider-Man was the result of a collaboration between Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Lee gave Peter Parker the angst that every teenage reader could relate to and Steve Ditko provided artwork that brought all the action to life.

Ditko stayed with it for the first 38 issues and Lee wrote the scripts until issue #100. Many other artists and writers have worked on the title over the years, making Spider-Man an indelible icon of pop culture.

For a sample of Spider-Man during his vintage period, here is a reprint of his first annual.

  1. This might well be my favorite Spidey story. Ditko's artwork never looked better on the book. The cavalcade of villains was an absolute treat when I first read this in its initial reprint in the late 60's. There have been some fascinating Spidey stories in the many years since the original run by Lee and Ditko, but none have surpassed these vintage gems.

  2. No offense to Romita, et al, but Ditko was the man and Lee was at the top of his game, writing wise during this period.
