L'EROTISME DANS LES FILMS D'EPOUVANTE (PART 1)

You can always count on the French for their uninhibited perspective on cinema. If there's a nude scene in a movie they have no compunction about showing it uncut and that includes printing unfiltered photographs in their film magazines.

Take the long-running weekly CINÉ REVUE magazine for instance. Founded in 1944 as THÉÂTRA CINÉ REVUE, the title was changed to CINÉ REVUE, then to CINÉ TÉLÉ REVUE  when television became popular entertainment. It has been published out of Brussels, Belgium since its inception. As far as I know, every issue still contains at least one full-page nude photo of a (usually) buxom woman.

What we have here today appears to be a special edition of L'EROTISME DANS LES FILMS D'EPOUVANTE (Eroticism in Horror Films), published in October 4, 1975. It is a remarkable collection of horror films over the years that contain elements of nudity, torture, bondage, bloodletting and other fetish topics. I don't read French, but it's not difficult to get the idea. And guaranteed -- you'd never see something like this published in the States. Suffice to say it's a visual feast on its own and there are many stills that I have never seen before.

MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL!

When a test rocket full of -- gasp! -- experimental wasps gets a dose of cosmic radiation then crashes in Africa, there's not only hell to pay, but green hell to pay as the mutant, irradiated insects begin killing off the native population. It's up to a small party of scientists to figure out what's going on and take care of a problem so big that even Orkin can't eradicate it.

Starring a pre-DALLAS Jim Davis, the spunky Barbara Turner and Eduardo "The Mummy's Hand" Ciannelli, MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL was released in 1957 on a double-bill with HALF-HUMAN, and later, RODAN.

Aside from the film being the usual giant bug fare of the fifties, the special effects aren't too bad thanks to the genius of Wah Chang's design and Gene Warren's stop-motion animation.

Exterior location shots were done at Griffith Park's Bronson Canyon caves in Los Angeles.

The final minutes were tinted and filmed in Technicolor.

NOTE: The wasps in this film were the inspiration for the "Horrible Hamilton" figure included with Remco's HAMILTON'S INVADERS toy set from 1964.
