Science fiction has always been a popular film medium, but the 1970s saw a surge in popularity that hadn't been seen since the sci-fi/giant monster craze of the 1950s drive-in circuit. As far back as a decade earlier, the TV series STAR TREK lit the kindling that would become the blockbuster blaze of STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (both released in 1977).
This issue of HOLLYWOOD STUDIO MAGAZINE from June 1978 is a special science fiction movie issue and includes lots of great features covering the genre.
