Here we have Lon Chaney, Jr. looking dapper and stumping for Schaefer Beer in 1945. Schaefer Lager was first brewed in 1842 and is now owned by Pabst since 1999 after purchasing the brand from Stroh. The flavor is characterized as a "light, classic American lager characterized by a clean, mellow, and slightly sweet taste". It's sold mostly on the east coast. I'll have to try my local Total Wine and see if they happen to carry it.

What Lon wouldn't do for a buck (and probably all the beer he could drink)!

A MODERN DAY H.P. LOVECRAFT AD

Advertising has always contained some form of suggestive content to sell their product. As a matter of fact, a book titled "Subliminal Seduction" by Wilson Bryan Key was published way back in 1973 that claimed advertising back then used hidden, sexual imagery to manipulate the consumers' subconscious to influence purchasing behavior. While some of the photos he presented as evidence were as unlikely as finding an image of Jesus on a cereal box, after reading it, I agreed with his overall assertion of suggestiveness and innuendo.

Can you find the phallic symbol in this image?

While thumbing through an issue of MARQUEE, a 1970's Canadian film magazine, I came across a full-page ad that instantly struck me after seeing the name of the company. Of course, my perverse mind spun into its usual humor by association mode, but I think you'll find it easy to follow my twisted train of thought.

Here's the original ad from a company that looked like the Toronto version of Frederick's of Hollywood:

And with that in mind, I reworked the ad and applied the idea into one that advertises books by H.P. Lovecraft.

I don't know about you, but after finishing this I felt compelled to run down to my local Barnes & Noble!

This clever full-page ad for Schick razors appeared in magazines in 1991. Since Chaney, Jr. passed away almost 20 years earlier, it is assumed his estate earned the licensing fees.

MONDAY MORNING MACABRE NO. 100

These hilarious strips parodying Dracula were by the late, great Don Martin. They appeared in MAD #213 (March 1980) and were reprinted in MAD SUPER SPECIAL (Winter 1986) and again in MAD #33 (October 2023). For reasons unknown to me, the most recent reprint Warner Bros./DC Comics decided to take Martin's name off the title and replaced it with "Mad Looks At ... DRACULA" (?!).

Don Martin deserves credit where credit is due, I say! They credited him in a couple of other strips in the same issue but not this one. They did leave his name on the last panel at least. Martin is of course well-known for his zany humor and off-the-chart sound effects.

Anyway, MAD is just a desiccated shell in my opinion. From what I understand the print edition is made up of reprints with scant new material and now only being distributed via the direct market and subscriptions. What a shame. Yes, Me Worry!
