It is said that those things that can be made into parody have a good chance of longevity. No better example can be made than with the Frankenstein monster.
Here he is is in a humorous strip from Marvel's NOT BRAND ECHH (#12, February 1969). The cover is by Marie Severin and the story, "Frankenstein Sicksty-Nine!", is written by Arnold Drake and drawn by Tom Sutton.
This is among my very first experiences with the Frankenstein monster in media other than the novel which I read for the first time a year or two before this comic hit the stands. The Universal movies were not so much available on TV as were some of the Hammer versions, so I be I'd seen that on some Halloween movie marathon. I know that another version of Frankenstein (the scientist) showed up in Silver Surfer around this same time. That struck me as odd at the time that Marvel was so enamored with the concept. Little did I know that in a few years or less Frankenstein would get his own color comic from Marvel. Oh, and by the way I love the work of Tom Sutton.
ReplyDeleteSutton was one of those artists who had a unique and recognizable style. I loved it!
