"It ate him... bit off his head... like a gingerbread man!" - Crawford Tillinghast, FROM BEYOND
Expecting to fetch $2,000 to $2,500 at a current internet auction is this foam prop of the Dr. Pretorius mutated head from the over-the-top Charles Band-produced, Stuart Gordon-directed horror flick inspired by the H.P. Lovecraft story of the same name, FROM BEYOND (1986). Literate Lovecraftians would say that the story-to-film is a bit of a mutation as well.
Here is a description of the lot:
"Shock master Charles Band wanted to "out Thing The Thing" with a movie that was even more horrific with transformations of the flesh. He found his inspiration from a H. P. Lovecraft short story, and made "From Beyond" (1986). The story is almost impossible to describe, but needless to say there are lots of horrific transformations and mutations, including that of Dr. Pretorius (Ted Sorel). The star of the movie is indeed these mutations by Mechanical and Makeup Imaginer genius Mitch Devane [credited in the film as Mitch De Vane]. Many were made in scale to create special perspective. This is one of these astonishing works of art, showing the good doctor in a moment of total head explosion. The detail work is astonishing including its realism, special eyes and teeth and outrageous detailed body parts emerging from the back of his skull. Made of formed foam rubber and then air-brushed, this set piece is in excellent condition. You will find it impossible to take your eyes off it! (Approx 9"x11"x5")".
