THE CREATURE: FIRST-TIME FACTS

Topping my list of favorite 50's monster movies is Jack Arnold's CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (Universal, 1954). One of the best and most innovative costumes was created for the thrilling film, which could have easily gone the other way compared to any number of other productions during this period.

For good reason, the Creature found its way into print media at the time, and the article that we see a lot of is the one from MECHANIX ILLUSTRATED. This one's from THE SKIN DIVER (August, 1954) and it reveals what were, at the time, first-time facts from the film.

I sorely miss Fantastic and Amazing from this era. They are without question my favorites of this kind of thing. The formatm, the works, the art, it was all ideal. Lin Carter is one of the most important folks in the history of modern fantasy. His editorship of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series alone makes him that, setting aside all the work he created himself. Did he love his literary heroes a bit too much, possibly, but it's a failing I find easy to forgive. He was a pioneer in this stuff during the paperback era.
