PUT ON YOUR OWN MONSTER SHOW WITH THIS BOOK! (PART 1)

MOVIE MONSTERS: MONSTER MAKEUP & MONSTER SHOWS TO PUT ON
by Alan Ormsby

1975
Photographs and drawings by the author

After he wrote the scripts for cult favorites CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS (1972) and DERANGED: CONFESSIONS OF A NECROPHILE, Alan Ormsby turned his hand to writing a children's book! Quite probably influenced by Warren's DO-IT-YOURSELF MONSTER MAKEUP HANDBOOK (and a makeup artist himself), Ormsby provides his own version with simpler makeups for youngsters. The book was published by the hugely popular Scholastic Book Services in 1975.

The book is divided into three parts: "The Greatest Movie Monsters", a history of (mostly Universal) film monsters, "How to Make a Monster", instructions on how-to make yourself up as various creatures, and "How to Put on a Monster Show". It includes a full script for a "monster play".

The content is obviously intended for a younger audience, but much of it is amusing and, yes, a little nostalgic for us first generation Monster Kids. Find out how to make your own blood (a Karo Syrup recipe also found in Dick Smith's makeup handbook for Warren) warts, and lots more. And, don't miss the paper bag Frankenstein monster head!

I missed this book because I was an "adult" when it was published, but I'm sure it was snatched up by the gross by the next generation of monster lovers.
