THE SPIRIT MEETS DR. COBRA AND THE BLACK QUEEN

Will Eisner's character, The Spirit (aka Denny Colt) started out in a Sunday tabloid insert section of the Register and Tribune Syndicate newspapers. It was commissioned by Quality Comics publisher Everett M. Arnold to help the circulation of the papers and ran from 2 June 1940 to 5 October 1952. These are the first three installments.

Following those is an example of the Sunday Section from The Chicago Sun Times, June 29, 1947.

"The Origin of The Spirit" (June 2, 1940)

"The Return of Dr. Cobra" (June 9, 1940)

"The Black Queen" (June 16, 1940)

  1. I have been in the midst of a Spirit boom of late, spending too much money on getting together a set of the archives. That led to other things and let's just say the Eisner collection at the Dojo has increased significantly.

  2. As well it should. As well as Eisner being the grandmaster of the comics dojo, his strip is endlessly interesting and entertaining.
