This is the Marvel Comics title that was used to introduce new characters into the Marvel Superhero Universe, as well as its Marvel Monsters line. The second issue of MARVEL SPOTLIGHT premiered the appearance of Jack Russell (the man, not the terrier) Werewolf By Night. Russell was a just-turned 18-year-old teenager who discovers he turns into a werewolf "when the wolfbane blooms" (the Curt Siodmak-penned Universal monster verse was used on the splash page.
Thematically patterned a little after another angst-ridden teenager, one Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, Russell's exploits were helped along by the adept story-crafting of Gerry Conway and the atmospheric, Will Eisner-inspired art of Mike Ploog. The back-up story is an episode of Bill Everett's sexy Daughter of Zeus, Venus. An auspicious beginning!
