SINISTER SIMULACRA
Rod Serling's shocking ending to the original PLANET OF THE APES (1968) wasn't the first time the idea had been used. The cover of the Aug/Sep 1953 (Vol. 1 No. 2) issue of FANTASTIC UNIVERSE magazine depicts the dilapidated ruins of the Statue of Liberty in a setting of a future earth, albeit with spacemen gazing upon the landmark instead of Taylor and Nova. Even in 1953, the notion evokes awe and more than a little discomfort.
