HANNES BOK ORIGINAL ART
Sold just this last April for the sum of $50,000 is this work by artist and illustrator, Hannes Bok. Bok's work is found is many pulp magazines and his fantastical paintings and drawings are uniquely recognizable.
A version of the work shown here, created in mixed media, is titled "Dark of the Moon", and was used as the cover art for the first issue of Lester Del Rey's FANTASY MAGAZINE (February 1953).
Description of Lot #71181:
Hannes Bok (American, 1914-1964)
Dark of the Moon, Fantasy Magazine cover, 1953
Mixed media on board
11.75 x 9.75 in. (sight)
Signed and titled on the reverse
The stunning cover painting by Bok was done for the legendary 1950s digest Fantasy Fiction (with the first issue titled Fantasy Magazine), which featured stellar artwork as well as writings by such legendary figures as Robert E. Howard. All four published issues sported beautiful Bok cover illustrations, and this image is certainly one of the most striking. Bok's jewel-like paintings are among the most immediately recognizable from the height of mid-century American fantasy and science-fiction, and his published original art is quite scarce. This painting is one of the finest by the artist we've offered, and was acquired by the current owner from famed collector Jerry Weist.
Following is a remembrance of Hannes Bok from CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN #6 (1965) after his death the year before.
