H.P. Lovecraft even took a shot at having STRANGE TALES publish one of his stories. He submitted several before the first issue was published, but the only material of his that was ever accepted in the magazine was a story that he had partially ghost-written for Henry S. Whitehead that appeared as "The Trap" in the March 1932 issue. Lovecraft didn't like to be "edited" and was miffed that Bates "meddled" in his meticulously-written stories. Bates called Lovecraft's work "too atmospheric", which would be a compliment in say, WEIRD TALES, but Lovecraft should have understood that Bates wanted action stories. In any event, as he was wont to do upon more than one occasion, Lovecraft never sent another manuscript to Bates and continued to snipe at him to in his correspondence.
