An unlikely combination of post-punk, horror and historical romance created the social genre known as "Gothic". The roots of this subculture are music and fashion, as well as a conscious preoccupation with Death.
The most famous example of "Goth" music is the single "Bela Lugosi's Dead", a late 70's techno dub song by Peter Murphy and Bauhaus. It is widely recognized as the beginning of Gothic Rock, which was very popular for a few years and still exists today in a more underground role than mainstream pop music. It was at the time, however, hugely influential.
Goth fashion has its roots in the Victorian Age and employs many of the accouterments such as dresses, jackets, bustiers and lace. Giving it all a modern touch are copious amounts of makeup, head wear and jewelry, frequently setting it all off with a set of custom vampire fangs. The end result is morbidly sexy.
The magazine, GOTHIC BEAUTY has put all this between its covers. Elegantly and professionally produced, it is certainly the current go-to resource for Goth culture. Included in the issue shown here (issue #37, August 2012) is a fitting article on DARK SHADOWS.
