The second section of Allan Ormsby's book, MOVIE MONSTERS: MONSTER MAKE-UP & MONSTER SHOWS TO PUT ON tells youngsters how to create and apply their own monster makeups. Simple materials are indicated, most of which are common household items such as tempura paint, shoe polish (!), food coloring, Karo syrup (for blood, of course!), hair spray and a few more things from Mom's vanity!).
Characters include Count Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman, Frankenstein's monster and Blacula. There's even suggestion for monster makeups for kids of color. Included are the obligatory cautions and warnings about using some of the materials, which is always a good thing to do both practically and legally.
Well, kids, have at it!
I have to confess that stuff on make-up only interests so much. I've found that special effects, either make-up or other can become the focus of the interest in a movie and that annoys me a bit. What about the movie's story? Some seem not to care. If I never see how to make up a zombie again I'll be fine. But if I was a youngster and there was some mystery, I might change my mind. (Boy did that sound grumpy.)
