THE MUMMY (DELL COMICS)

Well, Monster Kids, here's another Dell Comics adaptation of a Universal's classic monster movie.

Wrongly classified as a Dell Movie Classic according to some references, the indicia clearly indicates "THE MUMMY" with no volume or number -- just the date. This time, the art is by Jack Sparling and there is some speculation that the script might have been written by Don Segall (maybe even Don Arneson). No surprise that once again, the character's names have been changed and the plot doesn't follow the movie. But there is one surprise that didn't even happen in any of Universal's Mummy movies -- the monster speaks!

  1. I have a love/hate relationship with Jack Sparling. There's something there that I appreciate, but I'm almost always was a bit disappointed when I find he's the artist on something. I've gotten over that over the years, but it was an early prejudice. It's not fair to him or the work he did over a great many years.

  2. Sparling isn't on top of any of my favorite comic artists lists, and I've yet to get totally behind his work, which he did a ton of and I guess you've got to give him credit for that. I never came across any of his influences, but it looks like he's got a touch of Caniff in his style (who didn't back then?). There are definitely worse ones out there.
