I recently came across this old issue of SHOW magazine (April 1971). I remember buying the odd issue now and then when they contained anything about monsters, sci-fi, etc. This one has an interesting look back at science fiction films, including BEM's and giant insects as Harlan Ellison discusses the difficulties filmmakers had with putting SF in its proper context.
Ellison is always fun to read, but I think I disagree. The movies he cites as standing above the flock of SF flicks seem to me to be no more logical or true to physics than the ones he dismisses. Sure, THEM can't work, but who cares. That's not the point. I remember these kinds of arguments over the years and while I do kind of agree with his notion that 2001 is a bit overrated, I have to think he had a positive aneurism when STAR WARS dropped five years after this article.
