While monsters and science-fiction are not necessarily mutually exclusive, all-monster stories in a science-fiction magazine was a failed experiment. A year after the first issue of the Warren/Ackerman FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND, monster mania was gaining traction. The pulp digest SUPER-SCIENCE FICTION decided to get on board the monster train by offering up a series of issues that combined the two genres. Ultimately, it didn't seem to work for hardcore science-fiction fans as they abandoned the attempt after four tries.
This is the first story from their first "Special Monster Issue" with a cover date of April 1959. "Mournful Monster" was written by Dan Malcom, a pseudonym for none other than Robert Silverberg.
