Jeff Jones (as he was known then) was one of the talented quartet of artists that included Bernie Wrightson, Michael Kaluta and Barry Windsor-Smith, who collectively worked out of a high-ceiling loft in Manhattan's Chelsea District in the mid to late 1970's. They formed the partnership to avoid the iron rule of publishers so that they could freely create their own material. It must have been some heady airspace in that room when they were all at their drawing boards . . .
From 1972-1975, Jones published a monthly strip in the NATIONAL LAMPOON entitled, IDYL. The strips were collected by Blue Star and published in 1975. It was reprinted by Dragon's Dream in 1979. These scans are from the original edition.
Amazing! I was just re-reading Idyll just the other day, thumbing through a copy of the great work I'd gifted to my girlfriend. Catherine (Jeff) Jones was a magnificent artist. I don't always understand Idyll, but I'm fascinated by it. It was the first thing I read in those vintage issues of National Lampoon.
