Is it possible that Al Williamson's Flash Gordon is the best one, even better than the creator Alex Raymond? That seems too much to say, but Williamson's is certainly on par with the great man's efforts.
ReplyDeleteWilliamson was an admirer of Raymond's Flash Gordon. Between that and his attending Burne Hogarth's art school, he had the chops to emulate Raymond. So far as him being better, I'd say his work is excellent but Raymond was the consummate strip artist (along with Hal Foster) and his work had an influence on many. Williamson was probably the best at that.
