EERIE NO. 1 (WARREN)

James Warren would often introduce new titles to expand his publishing empire. His EC Comics-influenced comic magazine, CREEPY was doing well and he thought a companion magazine would add to the profits. Naming it EERIE, he was all set to begin designing the magazine when he found out that another publisher had the same thing in mind, Myron Fass. Warren quickly got together with Archie Goodwin and they assembled a 24-page, black and white digest-sized "ashcan" of EERIE #1. He sped over to the Library of Congress and registered the copyright. An edition of 500 copies were sent out to friends and agents at several large cities who got the copies onto newsstands. The result? In Warren's words: "We did this for hours before [Fass] was to go to press. Four hours. And we got his ass."

A copy of the EERIE #1 ashcan edition sold at auction in 2022 for $4,560.
