Marvel had paid for the rights to use the Conan character from Glenn Lord, Howard's estate agent. They agreed to pay $200 an issue (!). If you can believe it, at the time that left next to nothing to produce the issue. Roy Thomas was called in to write it for free and they paid a new artist (that had a little of Jack Kirby's blood in him) -- Barry Smith -- peanuts to draw it. As we all know, Smith went on to become one of the most celebrated comics artist of the era.
In this story from issue #2, "Lair of the Beast-Men!", Conan fights a snow leopard and a quartet of beast-men with names right out of an ERB Tarzan novel.
