Comic book legend Jack Kirby left Marvel Comics in 1970 and went to work for DC where they allowed him complete creative control over his work. He responded by creating the first three of his long string of astounding titles, NEW GODS, MISTER MIRACLE and THE FOREVER PEOPLE. In 1972, he launched another one of his character ideas, Jason Blood, better known as THE DEMON. An imaginative series from the mind of someone who never seemed to run out of them, it ran for 16 issues. Kirby was also allowed editorship of his book, and in his editorial (on the last page), he waxes philosophical about his projects. Not to be undone, he also announces a new title coming soon -- KAMANDI, THE LAST BOY ON EARTH!

I was a real dingbat when the Fourth World stuff ended and didn't pay attention to the work at DC which followed those cancellations. Demon is a first-rate comics with a fantastic backstory. Kamandi was too.
ReplyDeleteKirkby's imagination was boundless, as well as his perception of the current social climate of the day. As an example, "Soul Love" and "True Divorce Cases" were two of his ideas that went unpublished at DC in the early '70s.
