REVENGE OF THE SOAKY MONSTERS!

"When it's empty, it's a toy!"
- Soaky Bubble Bath

During the 1950's and 1960's, soap companies came up with the ingenious (and lucrative) idea to package liquid bubble bath in plastic containers that were shaped like kid's favorite cartoon characters. While it's hard to say if that got the dirty brats to take more baths is hard to say, but it definitely added a little fun to the froth.

In 1963, Colgate Palmolive's line, Soaky, jumped on the terror train and came out with a series of bubble bath characters based on the Universal monsters. Long gone now, I was fortunate enough to go through at least one bottle each of Frankenstein's monster, The Wolf Man and The Mummy. Along with my plastic pirate ship, I had no problem when Mom called out, "Okay, it's bath time!".

Needless to say, the Soaky monsters are highly collectible and are usually sold incomplete, missing the cardboard stand, the string tie, and of course, the contents. I've seen sets of these going for as high as $1,000!

Now, a new version of these classic bathroom creatures are coming this month with added characters. For 20 bucks apiece you can get the 10"-tall "re-imagining" of the original Soaky toys, now called Super Soapies. Sorry, no bubble bath in these -- this time the cap comes with an attached wand so that you can blow bubbles in or out of the bathtub! Available from numerous online suppliers.

Just remember, Soaky monster toys scare dirt away!
