In its simplest sense, the literary and film genre known as "folk horror" can be explained as where the real meets the unreal and the supernatural is present, but not always apparent. Settings are generally in rural, out-of-the-way places and the landscape is populated with denizens who practice the "Olde Wayes". Arthur Machen and H.P. Lovecraft were writing folk horror stories long before the term was coined, and many new authors have explored this fascinating subject.
