This later painting by Gogos, done in 2012 shows that he still had the stuff. Beautifully rendered, it was sold for $78,000 this last March at Heritage Auctions.
Lot Description:
Dracula by Basil Gogos (2002). Mint. Signed Original Acrylic Artwork on Canvas (30" X 40").
Painted by the great Basil Gogos in 2002, this one of a kind rendering of Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula is making its debut appearance at Heritage Auctions. Though Gogos had a long career painting everything from book covers, to fine art, and to retouching photos at United Artists, it was his work illustrating magazine covers for Famous Monsters of Filmland where he gained his greatest renown. Frankenstein's Monster, the Phantom of the Opera, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Gill Man, King Kong, and, of course, Bram Stoker's infamous count all became subjects of his eerie yet colorful paintings, becoming some of the publication's greatest cover images. Included with the stunning portrait of Lugosi are several signed letters from Gogos with their original mailing envelopes, photocopied concept sketches for the painting, signed prints of the painting, and a restrike photo from Dracula that Gogos used as a reference. The painting itself is flawless and shows absolutely no signs of wear or use, a dream piece for any horror collector.
