Robert E. Howard lived most of his life in Cross Plains, an out-of-the-way small town in Texas. It was there that he began his writing career, creating many memorable stories and characters, including his most famous, Conan the Barbarian, who has since become known worldwide.
This article from the April, 2021 issue of TEXAS MONTHLY, written by a Blackfeet Indian who grew up in a small town in Texas not unlike Cross Plains, is an absorbing look at how he related to Howard's stories of historical adventure (aka, Sword & Sorcery) and learned how to make those worlds into his own. Didn't Howard do that for all of us?
