Another fantastic example of Bay Area underground cartoonists paying homage to the EC horror comics line with their unique brand of horror and macabre humor. I imagine that one or two pounds of the green stuff and multiple gallons of brew went into the making of this issue. This scan is from the first edition.

"Nuts Boy" is actually credited to 'R. Grubb', not R. Crumb.
ReplyDeleteI believe that was Crumb using one of his pseudonyms. Will change the credit to reflect that.
ReplyDeleteTo be frank, it looks to me more like someone imitating Crumb than the man himself. By 1970, his work was way more polished than this.

DeleteTo set the record straight, R. Grubb is indeed, one of Crumb's many pseudonyms. Verification can be found at the Grand Comics Database and Heritage Auctions, who sold the original page on November 17, 2017 for $107,550.00. Never underestimate an crazed, artistic genius!.
ReplyDeleteThe backstory here is a little murky, but there appears a possibility Rory Hayes may have created the character, but didn't publish any of his sketches at the time. The artwork here is definitely cruder than Crumb was capable of by this point, but might this have been deliberate, a nod to Hayes' own lack of finesse? (There's an interesting discussion on this topic on Kyle Bridgett's YouTube show Canonically Crumb, episode 13.)
