I loved the first few seasons of THE X-FILES. Each episode had the solid combination of creepy monsters (both human and otherwise), a dark, foreboding atmosphere, and the perfect pairing of two outcast FBI agents relegated to their basement office and left to investigate the paranormal activity occurring right under society's nose that no one else would touch.
Then, something happened. In later seasons, Agent Mulder became obsessed with his quest for his sister, presumably abducted by aliens. While there were still tense and thrilling stories, I missed the cryptids and human freaks of the earlier seasons. Another series I liked, LOST, did much of the same thing -- a real good story of survival with a strange mystery surrounding the circumstances of their plane crash, then going off the rails with some pretty unbelievable characters and concepts (still, all-in-all a memorable series).
THE X-FILES remains very popular to this day, and the high demand for the trading card set from Topps is holding its own along with perennial mainstays like STAR WARS and STAR TREK and the ever-popular GARBAGE PAIL KIDS (who would've predicted that?).
This article from the December 2018 issue of NON-SPORT UPDATE traces the history of the Topps cards, as well as its popularity over the years.
EXTRA! The cast from STRANGER THINGS as Garbage Pail Kids!
