A POP CULTURE MOMENT (DAY 3)

There were more underground newspapers being circulated in the San Francisco area than the BERKELEY BARB. THE HAIGHT ASHBURY FREE PRESS was another tabloid-sized paper that came out of the genius loci of the hippy movement.

The issue shown here is Vol. 1 No. 6, from 1968. A satirical piece on welcoming pushers to "The Haight" opens the issue. There is more talk of drugs, telling readers "pot good, speed bad" and to smoke as much weed as you want. There is the obvious pitch to legalize it, as well as magic mushrooms, because they are a holy sacrament for Native Americans. Fifty years later, the hippies got their wish about one thing -- pot's now legal in California.

BONUS! Two programs from Bill Graham's Fillmore East, promoting upcoming acts.
