THE LONGEST DAY: 75 YEARS AGO

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." - George Satanyana

Today marks the 75th Anniversary of the largest land invasion in history. Code-named, Operation Overlord, it was designed to establish a foothold against Hitler's troops on the Normandy Coast of France, and it marked the beginning of the downfall of the Third Reich.

The battle was hard fought and the Allies lost 4,400 men among a total of 10,000 total casualties. At the end of the "longest day", the beach-head had been breached and the German emplacements had been overrun. Nine months later, the fighting would be over.

We as free citizens of the world owe the brave men and women that fought and died for our freedom, a debt of gratitude. In the face of an increasingly unsure future, may this great victory never be forgotten and why it was fought.
