LEE BROWN COYE'S WITCHES AND 'WEIRDISMS'

For artists, the venerable WEIRD TALES magazine was lucky to have Margaret Brundage for her beautiful covers and Virgil Final for his fine lines of fantasy finery; but Lee Brown Coye (1907-1981) holds the candle for some of the creepiest illustrations ever found between two covers of a magazine, period.

Besides his story illustrations Coye contributed a number of "true strange" one pagers called "Weirdisms". The short text tale, combined with his disturbing and exaggerated images, made for a truly weird read.
