In one of his DOUG'S HALL OF FLAME posts a short while ago, my friend Doug in a post about comic artist Steve Ditko mentioned a 'zine that he worked on called MONSTERS ATTACK! It was published by "GLOBE COMMUNICATIONS CORPSE" (they just couldn't keep the CRACKED puns out of anything they put out) and edited by the team of Mad Magazine alumni Lou Silverstone and Jerry De Fuccio.
The magazine was part magazine articles and part comics and took it's cue from others that came before it like Marvel's MONSTERS UNLEASHED and the earlier Larry Ivie publication, MONSTERS AND HEROES.
In this, the fifth issue, appeared comic stories by the aforementioned Ditko, Alex Toth, Gray Morrow, and others. The Frankenstein article that I show below was written by Kevin McMahon with a frontispiece by Gene Colan. The front cover art and inside front and back cover poster spread was by George A. Bush.
Note: The poster is scanned and stitched at full size, so downloaded and printed out, it will make a swell wall hanging. Also, if you'd like to read the Steve Ditko story (and you'd be a knuckle-draggin' mouth breather if'n ya ditn't), click HERE and Hop-Frog over to MONSTER COMICS WORLD.
Thanks for running this article and posting the Ditko story. Really enjoyable stuff! How rare are issues of Monsters Attack? I know that I have not been able to find them.
ReplyDeleteDoug, certain issues show up quite frequently for reasonable prices on eBay.
