This issue of the world's only monster newspaper features a "Super Salute" retrospective on what is now called STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES and includes an episode guide to the landmark television show. The "Keep on Trekkin'" centerspread is an amusing parody of R. Crumb's "Keep on Truckin'" cartoon.
Also featured is coverage of Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion-heavy 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and the 1932 MGM thriller, THE MASK OF FU MANCHU, starring Boris Karloff. The two-page humorous strip, "Conqueror" is by Jim Starlin and Greg Theakston.
Missing from that lengthy list of Star Trek fan organisations is the UK-based Star Trek Action Group, founded by Jenny and Terry Elson in 1973, and taken over by Janet Quarton. I was a member by 1976, and used its newsletter to promote plans to launch my own fanzine, Astron. (Co-edited with a former schoolfriend, Chris Cutts, issue #1 finally appeared in November 1977, with cover art by Brian Lewis.)
ReplyDeleteI noticed that the acronym for the group was STAG. Was if for men only? :) When I bought The Making of Star Trek book, I devoured it and was hooked.
ReplyDeleteUK Star Trek fandom was actually notable for the high proportion of female fans in relation to mainstream fandom. Unfortunately, this led to certain male sf fans predating upon them.
