One of the many MAD magazine imitators was Marvel's CRAZY. It was first introduced as an Atlas comic with a cover date of December 1953 lasting for 7 issues and revived briefly in 1973.
The title went to a full-size magazine later in 1973 and included a mascot by the name of "The Nebbish", a Yiddish term for a weak and ineffectual person. After a few issues he was renamed Irving Nebbish and later replaced by Obnoxio the Clown. Nebbish had a passing resemblance to CRACKED's Sylvester P. Smythe.
This King Kong parody appeared in issue #19 (August 1976). The cover is by Bob Larkin. The script is by Len Herman with art by Ernie Colon, alternated Kong's image between a cartoon character and one that was a faithful rendering of the original from the 1932 film.
CRAZY's last issue was #94 with a cover date of April 1983.
This is an example of an artist doing their best to "ape" Mort Drucker's style. Ooooh, that was a bad pun.

ReplyDeleteI am a big Ernie Colon fan, and as suggested he did have a style which was quite nimble. He evokes that MAD look effectively here without being stiff.
ReplyDeleteBoth Colon's and Staton's simpler line styles are pleasing to the eye. Howard Nostrand comes to mind as another artist who was adept at mimicking other artists when he needed to.
