JOHN SEVERIN INTERVIEW

"I can't draw a comic book person. I do another kind of human being. I don't know what to call it, but it isn't a comic book human being."
- John Severin

After Jack Davis, I'd have to say that John Severin is my favorite monster cartoonist. For instance, the work he did for CRACKED'S FOR MONSTERS ONLY is hard to beat.

But Severin's career is much more than monsters; as a matter of fact, his output was in large part what you could call historical pictorial fiction: westerns, war, and adventure stories were his meat. His meticulous research and attention to fine detail also make these tales highly accurate, and much more than one would expect in the field of comics (George Evans not withstanding!).

In 1970, John Benson interviewed John Severin for Bill Spicer's GRAPHIC STORY MAGAZINE #13 (Spring 1971). In this lengthy and revealing chat, Severin discusses his years at EC, his work at Warren, Marvel, Major Publications and more. A fascinating read on a truly unique talent that contributed a great deal to the comics industry.
