THESE ARE UNLIKELY TALES

In the style of Marvel's MARVEL PREMIERE and DC's SHOWCASE, in 1968 Charlton launched their own experimental "one-shot" specials with the title CHARLTON PREMIERE. The idea was to introduce new characters, story lines and genres each issue and invited readers to chime in with their thoughts in hopes that at least one of them would catch on.

This editorial in issue #1 explains the idea of the series.

While not the best thing that Charlton produced, nevertheless the short-lived five-issue series offered some interesting fare, albeit in hindsight, none of which had enough pizzazz to warrant a regular series. Numbering began in July 1967 with #19 following the last issue of MARINE WAR HEROES and re-launched with #1 in September 1967. This, the fourth and final issue is an anthology of "unlikely tales" with stories that could have been easily used in any of their other "ghost" or "haunted" titles.

The Dean of DC, Dick Giordano held everything together with his editing skills. Marvel/DC/Tower alumnus Steve Skeates provided the scripts (with the exception of one penned by his then wife) and we get some fair art by Rocke Mastroserio, Steve Ditko and Jim Aparo.

CHARLTON PREMIERE is also noted for contributions by Richard Edward "Grass" Green, who was the first African-American artist to join the early fan art movement and later had the same distinction in San Francisco's underground comics industry. Mr. Green also provided material for Charlton's teen comic, GO-GO.
