The 2010 version of Universal's THE WOLFMAN did not fare well with the box office (coming under its $150,000,000 budget) or the critics. To rub salt in the wound, The Los Angeles Times called it one of the "costliest box office flops of all time".
I for one thought it was pretty good, although I just couldn't get used to Anthony Hopkins as an old, grizzled werewolf. I also noticed how much Benicio Del Toro looked like Lon Chaney, Jr. in a couple of shots. Besides the work of the huge makeup crew (including Rick Baker) and the score by Danny Elfman, I thought the standout feature of the film was the photography.
The February, 2010 issue of AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER does a deep dive with cameraman Shelly Johnson as he explains his approach and techniques behind-the-scenes.
