A wild story, told in the usual first-person, "It Happened to Me", Man vs. Beast-style popularized in men's pulp mags. This one's from STAG (Vol. 24 No. 8, August 1974).
The narrator of the story is a hard-boiled, Vietnam vet who works as a trucker. He and his wife, Sarah, traveled together until their son was born and she became a stay-at-home mom. This leads to his infidelity and her discovering -- wait for it -- a bra tucked under the mattress of his cab sleeper! Sarah takes off to her moms's, but is lured back by -- wait for it -- a vacation together! They end up staying along the Tugaloo River in North Carolina and try to make another go of it by fishing for crappie... that is, until they are interrupted by a horde of cottonmouths! How do they get out of it? You'll have to read the story to find out.
The illustration that accompanies the story, "Night of the Rattlers", by Dave Caton, is by the great pulp artist, Samson Pollen.
Oh, and one more thing: I'm not a herpetologist, but before you begin reading, I thought I should ad that cottonmouths, commonly called water moccasins, while also in the class known as pit vipers, are not true rattlesnakes.
