The tagline on this comic magazine "WARNING - - - NOT TO BE PURCHASED BY THOSE EASILY FRIGHTENED) is much less restrictive-sounding than the "Adults Only" ribbon on the cover of last week's post of MONSTER MAG. This issue contains the comic strip adaptation of Ray Harryhausen's THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD with art by--I believe--Kevin O'Neil. The fold-out poster is a nice photo of The Cyclops.

Despite modern advances, those stop-motion wonders still impress my imagination. And the Cyclops is one of the best.

DeleteI'm not convinced the cover painting is by Kevin O'Neill, but the comic strip certainly appears to be in his style (Kevin later drew The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for DC Comics and Marshal Law for Marvel Comics; he died in 2022). The portrait of Boris Karloff is by Jim Pitts, who was a regular illustrator for the horror digest Fantasy Tales.
ReplyDeleteI suspect 'Steve Jones' is Stephen Jones, who would launch Fantasy Tales with co-editor David Sutton in 1977 (the first issue had a Jim Pitts cover). He's since written a number of books on horror movies, some in collaboration with Kim Newman.
DeleteRip: They were all good, but Cyclops was one of Harryhausen's best. The skeleton warriors in Jason and the Argonauts is at the top of my list. Genius.
ReplyDeleteSteve: The O'Neill cover was a guess on a couple of sources I looked up. It looks more likely a composite of the theatrical film poster. My guess about "Steve" Jones is that it was "Stephen" Jones, too.
