BASIL WOLVERTON: MASTER OF THE GROTESQUE (PART 2)

Basil Wolverton's art endlessly fascinates me. That it is grotesque goes without saying, but the techniques he used to achieve his images is detailed, sharp, meticulous and approaches the sublime.

In an interview with THE COMICS JOURNAL, Al Feldstein commented that he had no art influences with the exception of space landscape painter Chesley Bonestell that inspired his covers. Unconscious or not, I see a little of Wolverton in his thick, clean lines without the fine cross-hatching and shading.

How Wolverton came up with so many crazy faces is anybody's guess, but each one is both hilarious and sometimes more than a little frightening and -- admittedly -- a tad disgusting.

This issue of Bill Spicer's GRAPHIC STORY MAGAZINE (Winter 1971-1972) is packed cover-to-cover with Wolverton material and includes images from his excellent interpretations from the Bible's BOOK OF REVELATIONS.
