THE APOCALYPTIC ART OF BASIL WOLVERTON

One day, cartoonist Basil Wolverton was looking for some background music to listen to on the radio while he was working in his studio. He settled on a religious station and it stuck. After infusing himself with the message of the Herbert W. Armstrong, head evangelist of the Radio Church of God, he was hooked and soon left a career working for comic books, MAD magazine, creating the famous image of Lena the Hyena, "ugliest woman in the world", and one of the few -- if only -- comic book artists to appear on the cover of LIFE magazine and became and became an ordained minister in Armstrong's organization. He did however, keep drawing, and produced some of the most disturbing biblical prophecy and apocalyptic images one could hope to ever see.

The following examples speak for themselves. More on Wolverton later.
