FANTASTIC WORLDS OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS

The late Richard Lupoff's Burroughs bio, "Master of Adventure" came at just the right time for me. It was 1968 and like other fantasy and horror authors (Tolkien, Lovecraft, etc.), there was a resurgence and rediscovery, including the works of Burroughs. There were Tarzan, Venus and Mars reprints, comic book adaptations and scads of artwork to accompany them all, Frazetta and Krenkel among my favorites.

A fan base sprung up and if you looked, you could find any number of 'zines and journals that were being published at the time. The fanzine shown today was published even later, in the summer of 1976, proving that the popularity of ERB had not waned.

Adorning the cover of this first issue of the fanzine, THE FANTASTIC WORLDS OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS, is the incredible pen and ink drawing by Frank Frazetta depicting who is presumed to be Diane the Beautiful being menaced by a Mahar, a species of intelligent flying reptile found on the lost world of Pellucidar. The images below include those of a statue of Dian produced by ARH Studios.
