The amazing Theatre du Grand Guignol was an obscure footnote in late 1800's French history until Mel Gordon's book, Theatre of Fear and Horror came along. It brought to the general public a look at one of the most unique -- and grotesque -- forms of entertainment in French history and popular culture.
