In 1970, Jack Kirby left the Mighty Marvel Empire for DC Comics. Increasingly dissatisfied with his overlooked standing as a creative force by publisher Martin Goodman, as well as a number of other disagreements, Kirby signed on with DC where he created his now-famous Fourth World Series that included THE NEW GODS and THE FOREVER PEOPLE.
When Kirby came aboard, one of the first titles that he wanted to work on was, of all books, SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN! The title was circling the drain, and Kirby brought it back to life for a time, using the Olsen stories to introduce some of the elements and characters for his Fourth World series.
The comics shown here today and tomorrow (SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #142, October 1971 and #143, November 1971), feature Jimmy Olsen and Company versus Count Dragorin of Transilvane and his wolfman side-kick, Lupek in a classic battle of monsters.
On a historical note, Jack Kirby was forever full of ideas and his creativity seemed boundless. One of them was a pitch he made to DC management for a square bound collection of his stories. The idea was rejected, but the concept would later become one of the most ubiquitous items in modern comics . . . the trade paperback.
