WARREN'S 'SPACEMEN' NO. 5 (PART 1)

SPACEMEN
Vol. 2 No. 1 (Whole number 5)
October 1962
Spacemen, Inc.
Editor: Forrest J Ackerman
Contributing Editor: Samuel M. Sherman
Cover artist: Basil Gogos
Pages: 68

Cover artist Gogos redeems himself from last issue's tragedy with a respectable scene from an episode of the RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON serial.

Joining FJA as contributing editor in this issue is Sam Sherman. Sherman is the person responsible for producing gems such as BRAIN OF BLOOD, DRACULA vs. FRANKENSTEIN, and BLAZING STEWARDESSES.

A "Ben Taubman" was listed on the contents page as head of advertising for the magazine. This happened to be publisher James Warren's father! Warren's birth name was James Warren Taubman. The elder Taubman is also credited in FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND. James Warren told David Horne, author of the catalog of Warren Publishing, GATHERING HORROR, that among other duties, ran Captain Company for a time.

Another interesting factoid in this issue is the "O. Henry's Comet" fiction feature, THE MONSTER MAKER, penned by Leonard Spaulding is none other than Ray Bradbury. Spaulding is the main character's name in Bradbury's DANDELION WINE.

All-in-all, a good, solid issue of a magazine from the limitless imaginations of Ackerman and Warren that folded much too soon.
