THE MUMMY BALLYHOO

ballyhoo; noun
bal·ly·hoo
1: a noisy attention-getting demonstration or talk
2: flamboyant, exaggerated, or sensational promotion or publicity
3: excited commotion

Ballyhoo was out in full force for THE MUMMY in 1932. Exhibitors took advantage of the exotic Egyptian theme and decked their theaters out accordingly. Some of it was quite impressive.

  1. No point in keeping a character that iconic under wraps.

  2. Since Karloff was only seen as the actual mummy for a few short seconds, patrons had a chance to gaze at his Jack Pierce-created visage (and a few nice tries at a full figure) for as long as they liked!
