FREAKS COMICS ADAPTATION (PART 1)

In 1992 Fantagraphics began publishing a 4-issue mini-series adaptation of FREAKS under their Monster Comics imprint in May 1992. While not a faithful adaptation, scriptwriter Jim Woodring maintains the core of the film's essential story and puts his own spin on it. The late Argentine artist Francisco Solano Lopez who created the visual perversity of the THE YOUNG WITCHES for the Eros Comix series the same year was a good choice as his bristly style adds the right touch of "freakiness". My one complaint is that the story sexualizes some of the characters and the amplification of this detracts from the sympathetic angle that Tod Browning was aiming for in the film.
