"After MAD, drugs were nothing."
- Patti Smith
If there was any doubt about the early underground cartoonists being influenced by EC comics, look no further than this series of posts from the reprint edition of BLAB #1 (Kitchen Sink Press, Spring 1993). Over two dozen of the most notable, influential and controversial comic artists that ever downed a can of Pabst, smoked a joint or popped a tab of Orange Sunshine weigh in on the influence that EC comics including -- MAD -- had on their tortured (but very creative!) souls. After an introductory history of the company, the artists open up about how EC led them down the mushroom path to working in underground comics.
What a great mag! I read every word.
ReplyDeleteI think so, too, Jack. I consider it an important historical document for both EC and underground comics.
