RICHARD CORBEN'S HEAVY METAL INTERVIEW

"Corben's method of storytelling is so grand
it overwhelms."
- Brad Balfour (Heavy Metal)

Outside of fandom, Richard Corben's first work was a self-published underground comic called FANTAGOR. It was reprinted by Last Gasp. He then went on to contribute to SLOW DEATH and SKULL.

In 1970, he went to work for Warren, where his material appeared in CREEPY, EERIE and VAMPIRELLA. His big break came in 1975 when the French adult comic magazine METAL HURLANT began publishing in English as HEAVY METAL. Corben was allowed the artistic freedom he needed to fully realize his comic "histories".

The following interview is from HEAVY METAL Vol. 5, No. 5 (August 1981). In it he discusses his influences, favorite books and movies and, most interestingly, his techniques.
